December 2016 Playlist

Hey guys…you good?  You cold?  You freezing?  You dying of malnutrition because your groceries have run out and your front door has frozen shut and there’s 9 feet of snow outside and you can’t leave your house and your life is flashing before your eyes in a flurry of snowflakes and icicles?  Me too.

Ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but not by much here in Calgary today.  This morning, I woke up and checked the weather as I was about to head out for my run and it was MINUS THIRTY-FREAKING-THREE DEGREES.  Nope.  No thank you.  I call it a day at -30.  So I ditched my running shoes and baked cookies all day instead.  Classic.

Here’s a photo of me swinging from a rope over a frozen lake in Banff last week.  Because…Canada.

I’ve been wanting to launch a playlist sharing section on this blog ever since I started it.  Actually, waaaaay back in 2010, I had a sad little music blog.  It had no followers.  I quickly abandoned it and never picked it back up again.

Anyway, as many of you know, music is one of my main passions in life.  It is right up there with running and travel.  I grew up playing piano and the french horn in the school concert band *insert nerd emoji*.  Around age 12, I taught myself to play guitar, bass, and even a little bit of percussion, and shortly after, I realized I could sing.  I began writing music and even released an album on iTunes back in 2011.  (Don’t search for it – I’ve now taken it down, but if you ask me nicely, I might be able to direct you to some of my music online!)  Music and performing have been a regular part of my life for as long as I remember, and although I don’t do it much anymore, it’s a very important part of who I am.

Obviously, being a musician and being a music lover typically go hand-in-hand.  My music library is not only massive, it’s also ridiculously eclectic.  A few random clicks can take you from Classical to Indie to African Tribal to Orchestral to Rap to Metal to Celtic to Country.  And my preference changes as often as my mood does.  (That’s pretty often.  Just ask my boyfriend about that one…)  As long as it’s real music, it’s pretty hard for me not to love it.

I plan to start posting a playlist every month that highlights either my Top 10 favourite songs of the moment, or favourite songs under a certain theme.  My goal is to share at least a few songs that you probably haven’t heard of.  Maybe you’ll like them, maybe you won’t.  But sharing music is one of my favourite ways to connect with people, and I believe that every adventure has a soundtrack.

This is what’s been fuelling my mountain drives and winter runs this month;

Give it a go and let me know what you think in the comments.
