Vienna, Austria

Vienna and I had a love affair before I even arrived.  I’d pictured it in my head as one of the most elegant places I’d ever known, and when we arrived after a 3-hour bus ride from Prague, I was not disappointed one bit.

We arrived into Vienna late at night, and it was raining.  Our hostel was covered in beautiful lush climbing vines, the streets were alive with sleek European hatchbacks whizzing by, and elegant women in pantsuits and heels sat in the nearby cafes, sipping lattes and typing away on their laptops.

I was a little disappointed when we were assigned our hostel rooms, because while the other 200 people in our group filed into the beautiful building that I was so entranced by, me and 7 of my friends were told that our rooms were in a separate building, which we had to access through an underground tunnel (that we nicknamed “the piss hallway”…self-explanatory), through a set of double doors that didn’t always lock, and into our two rooms that were dark, musty, and without windows.  Needless to say, for 4 16 year old girls and 4 16 year old guys, we were a little freaked out.  The girls and I even showered together in our bathing suits because being in the bathroom alone was creepy.

Our first morning took us to a panoramic tour of the beautiful city centre.  We had some free time to explore the streets and shops before our guided tour of stunning Hofburg, The Imperial Palace.

After our city tour, we returned to our Hostel to freshen up for the main event, an evening at The Vienna Opera House.  This was what I’d been looking forward to for so many months…I’d dreamed about being somewhere so beautiful, so historical…which is why I was so embarrassed when I fell asleep, along with half of our group, even the teachers.  A combination of jetlag, lack of sleep, and a go-go-go mentality, had completely exhausted us; and as soon as the orchestra started up, we were goners.  It was a beautiful experience anyhow, though…not many people can (or would want to) say that they took a nap in The Vienna Opera House!

I left Vienna with a lustful heart.  I wish we had more time to explore its stunning elegance.  But we were on to the next destination on a whirlwind tour with no time to waste.
