The Only Makeup I Travel With

As always, I’d like to start out by stating that I am writing this post purely out of my own free will.  I am not affiliated with Make Up For Ever or Hurraw! Balm in any way.  I do, however, work for an Aveda Salon, but again, I am not receiving any compensation, financial or otherwise, for writing this article.  These are my honest, personal recommendations.

Ok Ladies.  (And maybe some gentlemen too? Whatever floats your boat!)  If you’re anything like me, you still like to look pretty while travelling.  However, whether you’re backpacking or staying in 5 star resorts, chances are that your regular makeup routine will be shaken up in one way or another.  Maybe it’s too hot, and any makeup you wear seems to melt off of your face in minutes.  Maybe you’re planning on being in the water 90% of the time, and you don’t want mascara and eyeliner running down your face.  Or, maybe you simply just don’t have much space, and lugging around an entire makeup bag is not your idea of a good time on the road.  Whatever your needs, this post is for you.

When I’m at home in Canada, I actually work as a hairstylist in one of the top Aveda Salons in my city.  I’ve worked with Aveda since I was 15 years old, and I love all of Aveda’s products.  Working in the beauty industry is fun and exciting, but there is also a great deal of pressure to look my best all the time.  What I’m trying to say is, simply put, I am a little bit high maintenance.  When I want to, I spend up to an hour doing my hair and makeup for the day, and slather upwards around 30+ products onto my hair, face, and skin.  So, when faced with the dilemma of packing my beauty products for travel, I had a lot of thinking and elimination to do.  But, with a lot of trial and error, I have narrowed my makeup kit down to an impressive 4 items.

1. Aveda Inner Light Concealer

This is my favourite concealer in the world.  I’ve been using it for probably 7 or 8 years now.  It comes in 6 different shades, is as small as a lip gloss, and can be easily slipped into your purse or carry on to help cover up any stubborn blemishes.  It provides medium coverage, blends well, and can be applied over sunscreen too!  It’s also made of all natural ingredients, so it won’t make you break out.  Another bonus about Aveda products is that they’re packaged in post-consumer recycled containers and made in the only beauty product factory in the world (!) that is 100% wind-powered!  When you purchase Aveda products, you can really feel good about what you’re buying.

2. Make Up For Ever Aqua Brow

ImageA friend recommended this product to me a few years ago, and I have been addicted ever since.  Make Up For Ever makes a wide range of makeup products, but their Aqua line is all designed to stay put when worn in the water.  These products are even used by Canada’s Olympic Synchronized Swimming Team…so they must be good!  Aqua Brow comes out like a gel/paste.  I usually dab a little bit onto my hand and then use an angled brow brush to apply to my eyebrows for a natural, waterproof eyebrow that doesn’t melt off in the water OR the heat.  My favourite thing about this product is that it can also be used as an eyeliner!  I simply apply it with my angled brow brush to the underline of my eye when I need a little more definition.

3. Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash

ImageThis product originally came into my life because, as a hairstylist, I kept finding that my mascara was melting off of my face after an 11 hour shift of running my blow-dryer.  I went to Sephora in search of something that wouldn’t melt, run, or leave those annoying little black marks under my eyes, and Make Up Forever Aqua Smoky Lash was recommended to me.  Thickening, waterproof, and black – everything I was looking for.  I tested this mascara out for travel last year when I was in Ixtapa, and it worked wonders.  Not only is it now my go-to travel mascara, but it is also my go-to everyday mascara as well.  The only thing I will note here is that it is VERY difficult to get off with regular eye makeup remover.  I use Make Up Forever Sens’Eyes Waterproof Eye Cleanser to gently and effectively remove my eye makeup, which comes in a convenient travel size and lasts for a really long time!  (Link to Buy)

4. Hurraw! Balm

I originally stumbled upon this product in a SportChek store in Canada, and bought it out of sheer desperation, having left my regular lip balm at home.  What a pleasant and life-changing surprise!  An amazing lip balm made of raw, organic, natural and fair-trade ingredients that I actually like.  My favourite flavour so far has been Vanilla Bean, but I’m excited to try them all.  One of the best things about Hurraw! Balms are that they’re shaped a little differently than most lip balms…they’re kind of a flattened oval shape, almost like a lighter.  This makes them easy to slide into a pocket, and way less likely to wriggle their way out and be lost forever somewhere along your travels!  I usually have 4 or 5 Hurraw! Balms on the go at a time…one at home, one at work, one in my purse, one in the car, and, of course, one in my backpack.

  1. Love this! Eyebrows are crucial and MUFE brow gel is now next on the list to try.

    My staples: Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser, MAC brow pencil and eyelash curlers! (MUFE liquid liner for nighttime.)

  2. this can be a nightmare situation for all female travelers, even when like me you may not wear a lot of makeup. I will be trying all of the above, especially the mascara!!! i haven’t found one i like that actually does the job its supposed to yet.
    Thanks =D
